Helsinki, Finland and Prague, Czech Republic

After leaving St. Petersburg early in the morning I took the train to Helsinki. It was weird to be back on my own again but it would not last for long. On the train I made friends with this woman from Finland who was working in Russia. She gave me a bit of a run down on the history of Finland and its relationship with Russia. Basically Finland has only been independent since 1917 after being ruled by first the Swedes and then the Russians.

The woman has been working in Russia for several years but said due to the current political situations and the increased taxes Russia is placing on foreigner she will be moving home next year.

The Helsinki Train Station

On the train I got a free breakfast so was really happy as I had not even thought about food at 5am when I was leaving. Once in Helsinki I had 5 hours to look around before I had to catch a flight to Prague to meet Taz! I tried to see as much as I could in my short time and managed to see the following.

The town square

It was great to see free food and had to get some of these berries! yum!

The main church called 'Church in the Rocks'

The Harbour

And of course the home of Nokia

After my mad rush sightseeing I took my flight to Prague. From the airport I took a bus out to Holesovice to be meet by Taz, Nick and Lee. Very exciting. Lee's presents was meant to be a surprise but I had a feeling she would be there so wasn't to shocked to see her. That night we all had dinner with Paul. Who is a friend from Melbourne who is now living in Prague, teaching English. It was great to see Taz again as I had not seen her since January when she left for Spain to study for 6 months.

Nick and Taz in Prague!

That night we went for a few drinks at the Cross Club. Which is the coolest bar I have ever been to. It is made out of old car part and scape metal and looks amazing. Nick took a few good pics that night which I will have to add later. After staying awake for over 24 hours we went back to the hostel. Taz and Nick kindly organised me a bed in their room at the hostel and we made plans to do a walking tour in the morning.

The next day I did not wake up until noon. Which I think is the biggest sleep in I have ever done! The walking tour was not going to happen so instead we went to Tesco and got some ingredients to cook a meat pie for Paul and his housemates to say thanks for letting Lee stay with them and showing us around town.

We started cooking at 7 and the food was not ready until 11. But I wasn't our fault. The oven was really weird at Paul's place. Anyway the food tasted great even though it took ages and we had chocolate muffins for dessert. YUM!!

The next day I made Taz and Nick get up early and do a walking tour with me. It did not work too well as part way through it started pouring rain, so we stopped into a coffee shop for a hot chocolate. It must have been the most expensive cafe around. So after our overpriced hot chocolates and a fight with the waiter about whether we have to tip or not. (Naturally Taz and I informed the waiter that it was wrong for him to expect a tip and we should only tip if the serve is good.)

Ohh the rain is so much fun. Taz and Nick trying to keep dry

We went to Paul's place to say good bye to Lee who was off to Poland with some English guys she meet. That night Nick, Taz and I made plans to go to Cesky Krumlov on the first bus in the morning. We had a big of a task ahead of us as our room was not looking great.

I’ve been to Prague many times and I never get sick of it but now I am staying here to study. I love the small streets and the mystic environment, its like magnet to me. Walking from street to street, even if alone always makes me feel so small but at the same time so well connected to the city. I found the city very safe, as you can check in this link form the government. I never had a problem for being out until late and alone or ever saw any incident.
What I also enjoy in this city is the night life, the Prague music clubs are all so cozy and have such a nice environment and decoration and make you want to stay long. If you or any of your friends want to go there again I leave you here a nice site with good clubs to go. Incredible how beer can be so cheap!!
